A couple of weekends back we headed to Turtle Bay in Norwich for a family meal. As I had been to the VIP opening night a few weeks back I was really excited to be returning and trying out the menu. Husb was potentially even more excited as the guys in his office had been raving about it.
So we turned up at lunch time on a Saturday that Norwich City were playing at home, it was quiet when we arrived but as you can imagine the restaurant did nothing but get busier and busier.
We started with drinks and cocktails are 2-4-1 it seemed rude not to have two. Caribbean Pimms is amazing, definitely worth having two of. Not one each. I had two cocktails! Andy had a lager and L had a berry smoothie which he really enjoyed.
Husb and I both had starters and arranged for L’s kids meal to be bought out at the same time. I had the Hot Hot Roti, which were amazing and husb had the Duck Roll. L had loads of choice on the kids menu and the kids meals are only £4.50 which I think is great. We chose the Flatbread for him which came with a choice of sweet potato mash, rice ‘n’ peas, salad and fries, which he went for. He devoured his fries which were lightly spiced and started making a good dent on his Flatbread. His Flatbread was yummy, I may or may not have swiped a slice.
I had a Salmon Toastie for my main, which was from the light bites section, I wanted room for dessert. It was lush. Again you got to choose which side you had and I went for spicy fries, these are spicy, the kind of spice that builds up on you. Everything was really yummy and presented really nicely. Husb had Grilled Lamb Steak for his main as well. Served with slaw and a fresh green dressing and cooked with your choice of marinade, he really enjoyed it. L started tucking into the Caribbean slaw from husbs plate and got a bit of a surprise when he got some with the classic jerk glaze on. Poor kid turned straight to his smoothie after that.
When it came to desert there wasn’t really anything on the menu for kids but when we asked for just some ice cream for L they were really accommodating and sorted him with a scoop of vanilla and scoop of coconut. I had barbecued pineapple with a toffee sauce and coconut ice cream. This was only OK. The pineapple was tough and hard to eat with a spoon, I’m not sure I liked the whole chargrilled thing either, but that’s just me. Husb went for the brownies which were served with vanilla of ice cream, it’s safe to say he was disappointed with the portion size, but he did enjoy the brownies.
We enjoyed our Turtle Bay experience. If I was to change anything I would say we could have been asked if we wanted extra drinks whilst we were there and that there coud have been a better kids dessert option. We did have to wait a long time for our deserts as well. I appreciate it was a busy Saturday lunch time but the restaurant wasn’t at capacity and it had taken so long we were literally getting our bags ready to leave when it arrived. Only so much you can do with a fractious toddler.
But these were small hiccups in what was otherwise an excellent experience. The food was delicious, we will certainly be going back for more. Our waiter was awesome, I loved him. So good and really friendly. The whole atmosphere in Turtle bay is really fun and so perfect for Norwich. Most importantly we were made to feel not only welcome but completely at ease dining with our toddler which is always nice and not always found.
Prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are good. Starters are just the right size, as are the mains. The deserts we had were a little small though for the price.
Turtle Bay gets the thumbs up for us and we’ll be back for more cocktails.
Disclosure – we were guests of Turtle Bay in return for an honest review.
