Feeling Calm 21

Feeling Calm #21

For my birthday I was given a great new book ‘Calm’ and a journal from my friends to help me find some calm in my life and to de-stress a little. I have been writing in my journal everyday and on Wednesday’s I go through the daily highlights I’ve written down and pick out my 10 favourites.

This week I’ve felt rather stressed and behind with things work wise, as for actual paid work I’m not behind at all, blog reviews I’m not quite where I want to be but equally I’m not being chased so it can’t be that bad but blogging the personal things I want to write about I’m not even close.

I know things have to be prioritised and my blog should just be a bit of fun so I shouldn’t be stressing about it, but that’s just the kind of person I am. So today the boy is at nursery and I’m sat out in the garden and planning to catch up a bit.

It’s weeks like this where I have really noticed how my Mindfulness practises really help, I take 15 minutes out of my evening to write down one thing that made me feel calm, one thing I’m grateful for and my top three moments of the day. This focuses my mind on the positives and makes me feel happier, it also allows me to see trends and invariably my calm moments are going cycling, walking or cuddling with my boy, so I know I need to do a lot more of that. I also take 20 minutes a day to meditate, which is tough when I feel I’m behind on things, but I do it anyway and I feel amazing and way more productive afterwards.

So here are my top 10 moments from the past 7 days;

  1. Spending an afternoon skiving off work with my husband, he had booked a day off whilst L was at nursery to spend with me but I was too busy to spend the whole day with him, I felt really bad. So instead I worked all morning whilst he pottered about the house then we went out to grab fish and chips, and cuddled on the sofa watching movies all afternoon, perfect!
  2. Having a good list making session and getting myself organised for the week ahead, I felt so much better after this and like I was almost in control.

  3. Watching L chase husb around the garden with a water pistol, it was highly amusing to watch, whilst I sat on the swing all calm, happy and most importantly dry.
  4. Having a lovely walk around Swaffham just me and my boy, husb had gone to see his nanny, she’s in a home, but we didn’t think it was suitable for L to go this time as she’s just had a nasty fall and broken her nose and she’s not in the best shape, so I spent some time with L at a nearby park and then when some older children came and got a bit boisterous for L’s tastes we had a lovely walk into town and he was just so well-behaved and chatty it was perfect.

  5. Enjoying a lovely family cycle ride in the sun, on the way to a farm that was having an open day. It’s only a ten minute cycle ride, but we took the long way around and made it last 40 minutes, it was so peaceful and calm, it made me appreciate what a beautiful area of Norfolk we live in.
  6. Going to the open farm, as part of farmsunday.org our local Arla Dairy farm had opened it doors, there were tractors for L to sit in, bouncy castles, we got to watch the robots milking the cows, see the calves and there was a BBQ, homemade cakes and Pimms. So perfect all round. We loved that Arla had sent so much to the farm to support them, stickers and puzzle books and even milk samples for us to take home and we loved that farm had worked so hard to make it an amazing event, people had come from miles around it was just brilliant.

  7. After we had spent all morning at the farm we headed to our local for a few beverages in the sun with friends whilst the kids played in the garden, which happens to be very large at our pub and filled with toys. All in all Sunday was a pretty perfect day for us!
  8. L being an absolute gem at the dentists, I was dreading this trip as last time he bit the dentist, and this time round he was super tired, we had already run a few errands and I was stressed having been blocked in at the car park, but despite everything being against us he sat in the dentist’s chair, opened wide, had all his teeth checked and then had a chat with the dentists about giraffes! Such a relief. Plus when I got back to the car park someone had moved so I could actually leave, bonus.

  9. Having a lovely catch up with a friend and her son, despite both our boys being tired we managed a bit of a chat and had a lovely walk to the park where L played for a bit and then we all went to feed the ducks, even if I was unprepared and they got Peppa Pig apple and raisin bread sticks, L doesn’t like them and the ducks did so that went well.
  10. Getting invited to a press trip in Bavaria! How freaking exciting is that, I only found out yesterday afternoon and fly on the 20th, so not long to wait. I’m still over the moon and quite frankly even though I’ve got the flight confirmation through and already checked in for one leg of the trip still don’t quite believe it is happening. I can’t wait to share some more with you, but I can say it is camping related. Eeek!

I’m really glad I write down a few positives from each day and then go back through them each week, it helps keep me focused and happy and is a great way to keep a note of the things we’ve done.

    1. I’ll be back for more #bestandworst don’t you worry! It’s important to keep track of the little things I think, gratitude is infectious and it’s great to actively focus on it

    1. I am completely that negative and stressed person, I get really bad anxiety and stray towards depression far too easily but keeping my journal has really turned things around for me. Some days I struggle to find three good things that happened but I do always manage in the end xx
