FixMeStick – Review

You may remember earlier in the year I ran a competition giving away a FixMeStick with a one year subscription to the service. At the time I hadn’t had a moment to try mine out, but now it’s had some good use, I thought I’d share my opinions.

FixMeStick is a virus removal tool. It works differently to Anti-Virus software and provides additional protection and in some cases will be the only way to remove a virus.

Because the FixMeStick is a hardware device that runs before your PC or Mac starts it can remove the infections that got past your anti-virus protection. Once malicious software gets into your computer, it can be impossible to remove it while your computer is on. So if you can’t even boot your system you can still use FixMeStick.

As Anti-Virus software can only run when your computer is fully loaded and up and running it can’t scan through everything, they are designed to protect you against threats whilst your computer is in use, but if something slips through then FixMeStick is what you will need to actually remove it.

In use

Now I’m not saying Fix Me Stick will replace your Anti-Virus software, not at all, neither do they. In fact they work better in conjunction with each other. One to protect you during use and another to run a double check and clean up regularly.

As for ease of use FixMeStick could be more simple. Plug the USB Drive in to your computer, click on the drive folder and then run it. Done. It prompts you through initial set up, which takes seconds, then restarts your computer and tuns. My first scan took nearly two hours and didn’t find any issues. Subsequent scans have been a bit quicker and still not found any issues.

Getting ready to run the programme

From a review point of view I would have quite liked it to have found and removed an issue. From a personal point of view I am incredibly pleased it didn’t!

Setting it up was certainly a lot less painful than installing my Anti-Virus. As it is hardware, you do literally plug and play. I really like that. They suggest you run it once a month. I tend to do it a bit more regularly than that, just because I use my laptop all the time for work and would be lost without it and also because it is so easy, why not.

You have a range of pricing options with FixMeStick, starting at £9.95 for a 30 day trial. For a one year, three device home subscription it is £59.99. I have found it hard to judge value for money, having not found any issues. But for peace of mind alone I think it is money worth spending and will be renewing my subscription. Plus the actual Fix Me Stick is covered by a lifetime warranty and you get lifetime support. That’s great.

Ready to go

Plus if you know you have a virus and the FixMeStick can’t remove it, they will arrange to have it removed from your computer free of charge. That’s worth knowing.

I am very impressed with the ease of use, especially during first set up. I love that I haven’t had to download and install anymore files onto my computer. Mostly it’s just knowing that my computer is safe.

Disclosure – I was given my device in exchange for an honest review.
