intu Chapelfield Butterfly Baubles aim to raise more than £25,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices this Christmas

Norfolk’s biggest shopping centre, intu Chapelfield in Norwich, unveiled a unique, feature Christmas decoration yesterday, that will help raise money for a very important cause this winter.

The star-shaped design at intu Chapelfield will be visible from all three floors of the shopping centre, with baubles, lights and butterflies cascading down from the dining terrace roof.

As well as being a sparkling sight for shoppers, the Christmas star will also support East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) – specifically the charity’s nook appeal – as visitors will be able to buy limited edition glass baubles for their own Christmas trees.

2,017 beautiful glass baubles have been created, each containing a handmade purple origami butterfly and sparkling gold lametta. Every bauble has a delicate tag etched with its unique number, and comes in a purple, satin-lined keepsake box.

Sheridan Smith is marketing manager at intu Chapelfield. “We’ve been thinking about how we could help the nook appeal for more than a year now,” Sheridan explains. “We wanted a project that would resonate with our shoppers and staff at Christmas; enabling them to support an incredibly worthy cause whilst also bringing some sparkle to their homes.  We hope the EACH baubles become part of the tree-trimming traditions in hundreds of local families, as well as helping us to raise more than £25,000 for the charity.”

At 10am on Wednesday 1 November, on the dining terrace at intu Chapelfield, the EACH Butterfly Bauble Campaign was officially launched.  Rebekah Hughes, 12, and her mum Annabel, who live in Aylsham and have been receiving care and support from EACH since 2011, was among the guests launching thousands of tiny gold stars to celebrate the installation of the signature star decoration.

“Being able to choose a bauble number relating to a special date – perhaps a birth year, anniversary or age – means the EACH Butterfly Baubles are a really unique gift for, or in memory of, a loved one,” says Sheridan Smith. “We’re hoping that lots of people will share pictures of themselves with their bauble on our Facebook page, telling us the story behind why they’ve chosen to buy one.”

All proceeds will go to EACH’s nook appeal, a £10 million campaign to build a new hospice just five miles south of Norwich, in Framingham Earl, and transform children’s palliative care.

EACH has outgrown its current hospice in Quidenham and the charity, which cares for 50% more children and young people at Quidenham than at its other hospices in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, often has to cancel much-needed short break care to provide end of life care.

The nook, as a purpose-built central hub, will enable the charity to give both at the same time.

It is hoped the baubles will raise at least £29,000 for the nook appeal, which will be enough to fund a child’s en-suite room, including a specialist disability bath, at the new hospice.

The glass baubles make a fantastic gift as well as raising valuable funds for our new children’s hospice in Norfolk. Christmas is a stressful time for many of the families EACH supports and particularly for bereaved ones as they remember their child who is no longer with them.

EACH hosts Christmas parties so families can meet others in a similar position and relax in a supportive environment.
