Oxford Rye Organic Vodka

We have recently had the pleasure of trying Oxford Rye Organic Vodka, it’s a sublimely smooth drink and would make an excellent Father’s Day gift. I’ve enjoyed it over ice with a good tonic and played around with garnishes, finding that lime slices and and a few cranberries works nicely. Having thoroughly enjoyed it I’ve got some more information about this wonderful drink to share with you, so please read on.

Presented in a stylish, wax-dipped, bottle, Oxford Rye Organic Vodka is a double-gold medal winning spirit from the heart of ‘the city of dreaming spires’.

Distilled in two magnificent, Steampunk-esque, stills called ‘Nautilus’ and ‘Nemo’, it’s the debut vodka from The Oxford Artisan Distillery – itself the city’s first ever distillery.

An exceptionally smooth and creamy spirit, the vodka is filtered, unusually, through coconut shell charcoal and is described as having ‘subtle hints of spice and warm caramel’.

It’s one of a range of spirits produced by the firm, which is one of Britain’s very few ‘grain-to-glass’ distilleries (those who grow and distil their own grain, as opposed to buying in neutral spirit). It’s also unique in being the only one in Britain to use ancient heritage grains that had commonly been used until the late 19th century.

Now resurrected by the distillery, these grains are grown in vibrant, genetically diverse, fields, within 50 miles of Oxford – employing a super-sustainable practice known as ‘regenerative’ farming, which is a step on from simply being organic.

No pesticides or herbicides are used and the distillery’s farmers embrace ancient, gentler, methods of land management – such as using clover to suppress weeds and sequester carbon, while avoiding the destructive effect of ploughing a field*. By working naturally with the land and soil, biodiversity is massively boosted, contributing to an abundance of wildflowers, insects and birds across all the fields.

As a result, the distillery’s spirits have a well-deserved reputation for purity and taste – which is certainly the case with this vodka.

Oxford Rye Organic Vodka is best enjoyed as a sipping vodka, either at room temperature or chilled. Alternatively, when combined with a Sicilian bitter tonic and ice, it makes for an exceptionally refreshing long drink.

* Ploughing is a ‘no-no’ for the distillery as it breaks up crucial ecosystems created by worms and other organisms, releases carbon into the atmosphere (which is beneficial to soil health if just left be), negates the soil’s ability to hold water and depletes the build-up of organic matter that can naturally nourish a crop.

Disclosure – I was gifted a bottle of the Oxford Rye Organic Vodka. All images are my own. I have shared this because I have enjoyed it so much.
