A couple of weeks ago we got a lovely delivery from Little Dish. A fab cool bag filled with a selection of meals from the new Pots and Pies range that launched today, as well as a tablecloth to be coloured in, all in a lovely jute bag. L was very excited.
The new Pots and Pies range is filled with simple meals, made healthily and deliciously. In little pie dishes that you can serve them in. They microwave from fresh in 2 minutes 30 seconds. They are fun, filling and tasty. So L has been trying them out.
He has enjoyed everything about these meals, from the packaging to the meal itself. He’s liked being able to look at the packet and pick what he wants to eat, be it the cow, fish or chicken, he’s been able to choose. I like that inside each sleeve there’s a little picture to colour in, they may only take a couple of minutes to cook but they take a while to cool, so a little activity is a welcome distraction. Plus it makes them a bit more of a ‘treat’.
Not that they are ‘treats’ far from it. They are nutritious and healthy meals, just like I would have cooked up, only with none of the mess and none of the bother. They are perfect for days when we’ve been rushed and I haven’t had time to prepare anything, or for when I may have possibly misjudged the amount of lasagne I had made and didn’t have enough to go round. Whoops!!
Strangely he has really loved the little containers they come in. This is most unusual for him as normally he doesn’t like ready meals for kids and as soon as he sees the smaller containers go in the microwave he’s not eating. Let me be clear, this isn’t because I have some miracle child who eagerly eats everything his mummy lovingly creates for him. It is because he is awkward and this is just one of the many ways he can try to break me in any given day. But these little dishes are a hit. Is it because of the fun colours or the handles, maybe it’s the different shape to them. Whatever it is, it works.
As for the food itself, well he’s eaten it, he’s muttered the words yummy and even delicious which we didn’t know he’d learnt, so that was fun. It has been great actually. This is all great because in all fairness he’s going through a jam sandwich phase at the moment. A phase he normally only deviates from if there is yogurt or ice cream involved. I must admit I ate the Fish Pie, I know naughty mummy. But I needed a break from my diet and it was only small and it had one of my five a day. It was lush!
I have to add a bit of a shout out to the fab cool bag, one I love the cow on it, so much fun. But mainly it is such an awesome size it’s already been on two family picnics, not too big and not too small. A bit like the Little Dish Portion sizes really.
Which meal was L’s favourite? Well that’s hard to say. He loved the Spaghetti and Meatballs, they were proper meatballs and he picked them all out straight away. He also really enjoyed the Chicken Curry it was nice and sweet and a bit spicy too. My favourite was clearly the Fish Pie! I loved that it had salmon and a cod and the carrots in the mash topping were superb. I’ll be adding carrot to my mash from here on out. I was impressed that you could see what you were eating, actual pieces of meat and real vegetables. Not just a formless mush.
The new Little Dish Range is called ‘Pots and Pies’ and will be stocked in Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Ocado, Morrisons, Sainsburys, CoOp and Booths with a RRP of £2.30. Not bad for a night off cooking.
