This plus that equals…. my perfect summer
Here’s the latest instalment in my series of posts all about what makes our lives here at home tick. This week is all about what would make my perfect summer, a wish list if you will.
How fabulous has the weather been? Not to be too British about it, but it has been a bit too warm on occasion #melting! It’s certainly got me thinking about those things that go towards making a perfect summer.
Long evenings in the garden
I love our garden. So much. I love playing with L in it. I love just sitting for a minute when I need a moment. But for me summer is all about those blissful couple of hours I can spend outside after I have got L off to bed.
Just quiet time to actually talk to husb with no distractions. To enjoy that garden we work so hard on without balls flying about or water pistols soaking me.
I’m actually at the garden table writing this right now with a glass of prosecco and the cat next to me on his own chair. It is perfect.
Maybe it is just because we have recently returned from a fabulous holiday. Maybe it is because it is what summer is all about. But boy I’m caving another holiday,
Not even anything fancy, maybe just some time off work to spend enjoying my family.
Although I would love something fancy. We haven’t been abroad with L yet and I am just desperate to have that experience with him.
Now I’m not just talking glorious sunshine and heat here. Though that is amazing and I love it.
It’s also the epic storms you get. Lightening flashing across the sky. Random rainstorms so hard you have to run for cover, That week you always get that is hideous, grey, cold and wet and invariably when you are on holiday. I even love that week. I love that week because somewhere along the lines it where the memories are made. It’s a classic ‘can you remember the time when….’ week.
Summer is about the sun though. It’s about the warmth and the ability to go out without twenty layers. The chance to chill out in a beer garden at lunch or go to the beach and actually put your feet in the water, though that will still be bloody freezing, lets not get carried away here!
Summer for me has a definite smell.
It’s barbecues. Roses. Cut grass. Coconut. I always swap to coconut shampoos for summer. I think it stems from going on holiday as a kid at a time when all sun creams were coconut scented.
It’s also the smell of melting tar from the roads, creosote and wood stains from us and the neighbours treating fences and sheds. The smell of petrol and motorbikes and trackdays or races so hot you think you are going to explode.
A lot of what makes summer perfect for me is the smell.
I’m probably at my happiest during winter. I love the cold, the prospect of snow, I’m all about Christmas, I love nothing better than a freezing cold walk at the beach followed by a hot chocolate. I also get really stressed out by, well, pretty much all of that!
Summer, however, I’m almost always at my most calm. Maybe it’s because husb is more chilled, it is definitely his favourite season, he gets to play a lot more golf. Or because L is so happy to be outside without me wrapping him up. Maybe it’s all the sunshine and the vitamin D. I’m not 100% sure, but summer is definitely the season I am the most chilled out and laid back. Summer is my downtime. My relax and chill time.
What makes your perfect summer? There’s a lot to chose from I think. I certainly found it hard to narrow down the things that for me truly add up to make summertime so special to me.
