To celebrate the launch of Zuru’s 5 Surprise Series 2 L was sent a fabulous bundle of Zuru toys to enjoy over Half Term.
5 Surprise is a ball, split into 5 segments, a bit like an orange. Each segment is sealed and contains a different toy. It’s like a surprise egg with extra toys and no chocolate!
Aimed at ages 3+ you have a choice between the blue 5 Surprise balls which contain toys aimed mainly at boys and the pink ball which is pitched at girls. Part of me thinks the choice is good, another part thinks it unnecessary and rather irritating, but at the end of the day you can pick whichever you think will have toys most suited towards your child’s tastes.
L had one blue ball and two pink and bar two princess toys that turn into cupcakes he liked everything he received in both options.
The excitement of opening the ball and then the individual segments was off the chart and I can see how these would make great rewards or treats. I also thought they would lend themselves towards long journeys well too, there is a slim chance you could get them to spread out the opening and the excitement, but 5 new surprise toys would keep us going for the majority of a flight, train or car journey.
The surprise toys come in collectable ranges, so you can try to get all the different colour pens, or all the different key rings etc. I like this as it keeps the excitement going and means you can
bribe reward with the chance to complete their favourite set of toys with a new 5 Surprise.
L’s favourite toys were the fairy toy, silly putty and mini torch keyring. He liked all the other toys apart from the princesses I mentioned above but I can’t see them having much staying power.
I really liked the pen, the stamp and the window suckers. The pen and the stamp especially are immediate crafty fun, wherever you are, and I easily tidied away at home with all his other pens and craft supplies. The window suckers I just thought were cute and would entertain him for ages on a car journey, sticking them on the windows and pulling them off.
I loved that they included silly putty and not slime, it’s cleaner and easier to deal with, but the pot it comes in isn’t resealable in any way which is a real shame as it means you will not be able to keep it. I really disliked the fact L’s torch keyring was a machine gun, I felt it a little inappropriate but realise that is probably me.
Overall I really like 5 Surprise as a little treat toy and L thinks they are marvellous, he really enjoyed them!
In our package we also got a couple of other Zuru toys, a Rainbocorn and a Robo Alive lizard.
They have both been big hits with L, to my surprise I would say he prefers the Rainbocorn!
The Rainbocorn is a cuddly toy animal with a unicorn horn. It has several surprise elements. It is packed in a giant Rainbocorn egg, so you have no idea which animal you will get. On its tummy is a sequin heart, which will reveal a hidden sequin picture, which picture will you get? The sequin heart is detachable so you can swap them around or play with them separately. Then finally inside the big egg is a tiny little mini egg with a baby Boo-boocorn, also a collectable surprise, you might even be lucky enough to get the special twin Boo-boocorns.
L has already forgotten about the Boo-boocorn but he loves his Rainbocorn and sits for ages just cuddly it and stroking the two way sequins. It lives on his bed now and is already a firm favourite and I can see it remaining so.
His Robo Alive lizard is a lot of fun. It’s simple to use, just on or off. It scuttles around the floor and can handle all the surfaces we have in the house, carpet, hard floor, rugs. It’s got a soft rubber tail that adds to the life like movement and it’s eyes reflect light back creating a great look.
The best bit is when you stroke it under the chin, tipping it’s head back, it will stop. It allows you to interact with the little robot like it’s a real pet but also makes it easier to actually turn it off.
As it doesn’t do much more than just run about it isn’t something L will play with for long, but it will be a toy he goes back to again and again.
